We are all aware of the benefits that the Internet provides and what an astonishing tool this is for enhancing our children’s education. The Internet can provide incredibly valuable resources to support our children’s learning in every area of the curriculum, and, of course, unlimited entertainment and possibilities for exploration. Of course, with these amazing possibilities come the dangers of inappropriate content and risks of “stranger danger online”.
Pre-empting and avoiding issues that arise from the use of the internet, is essential, and Parents and Carers are in the best position to ensure that children are well protected when using all types of devices (computers, smart-phones, games consoles, etc). There is no simple “quick fix” to ensure children’s safety online, but there is a lot of information available to guide you.
Please find below, links to some useful resources providing invaluable advice on on-line safety. You may wish to share some of these sites with your child to help them develop a better understanding of how to stay safe online, however, we suggest that you visit these sites in advance to select appropriate areas to discuss with them. On our School website, we also have child-appropriate resources which can be found under Children\Curriculum\Computing\Online Safety. Please do encourage your child to take a look.
The School feels strongly that isolating children from the Internet is not the answer, but, putting in place relevant parental controls, and ensuring that children do not access the internet unsupervised, will prevent them from accessing inappropriate material or making contact with strangers.
